Anxiety & Avoidance: School refusal

What's Happening:

School refusal is often rooted in anxiety, fear of separation, social stress, or feeling unsafe. It is not laziness or manipulation - it is distress.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when fear is expressed openly.
How to do it:
Stay calm and validating
Listen without fixing

What to say:
"I know this feels scary."
"I'm here with you."

Why it works: Validation reduces panic.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when anxiety is intense.
How to do it:
Focus on grounding
Keep routines predictable

What to say:
"You're safe right now."
"One step at a time."

Why it works: Safety cues calm the nervous system.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when avoidance persists.
How to do it:
Maintain expectations
Support gradual exposure

What to say:
"School is happening."
"I'll help you through it."

Why it works: Consistency builds resilience.
