Aggression & Impulse Control: Kicking

What's Happening:

Kicking is often a physical expression of big emotions when impulse control is overwhelmed. The body is reacting faster than the child's ability to use words or problem-solving skills.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when the child is emotionally flooded.
How to do it:
Stay close and calm
Position yourself to keep everyone safe

What to say:
"You're really upset."
"I'm here with you."

Why it works: Calm presence supports regulation and reduces escalation.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when kicking happens during intense dysregulation.
How to do it:
Reduce stimulation
Keep language minimal

What to say:
"You're safe."
"Breathe with me."

Why it works: Grounding helps the body exit fight-or-flight.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when kicking becomes unsafe or repeated.
How to do it:
Clearly block the behavior
State the boundary

What to say:
"I won't let you kick."
"Feet are for keeping people safe."

Why it works: Clear limits protect safety while teaching appropriate behavior.
NOT THAT

Yelling
Physical punishment
Ignoring safety concerns
