Technology & Modern Stress: Emotional Dysregulation After Screens

What's Happening:

After extended screen use, the nervous system can be overstimulated. Transitions away from screens may trigger irritability, anger, or emotional crashes - especially in neurodivergent kids.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when emotions spike after screen time.
How to do it:
Acknowledge the shift
Stay calm

What to say:
"Your brain worked hard."
"It makes sense you're upset."

Why it works: Validation reduces escalation.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when dysregulation is intense.
How to do it:
Lower stimulation
Offer grounding

What to say:
"Let's slow your body down."
"You're safe."

Why it works: Regulation comes before reasoning.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when behavior affects others.
How to do it:
Maintain limits
Support recovery

What to say:
"I won't allow hurtful behavior."
"We can reset together."

Why it works: Boundaries protect relationships while supporting recovery.
NOT THAT

Lecturing about screens
Immediate punishment
Ignoring the nervous system impact
