Technology & Modern Stress: Screen Time Battles

What's Happening:

Screens are designed to stimulate dopamine and reduce impulse control. Older kids may struggle to disengage, regulate emotions, or transition after screen use.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when transitions are difficult.
How to do it:
Give advance notice
Stay calm

What to say:
"You have five more minutes."
"Transitions are hard."

Why it works: Predictability reduces resistance.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when dysregulation follows screen use.
How to do it:
Reduce stimulation
Allow decompression

What to say:
"Your brain needs a break."
"Let's reset."

Why it works: Regulation supports smoother transitions.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when limits are ignored.
How to do it:
Set clear boundaries
Enforce consistently

What to say:
"Screen time is over."
"We'll try again tomorrow."

Why it works: Consistency builds self-regulation.
NOT THAT

Sudden shut-offs
Arguing about rules
Inconsistent limits
