Executive Functioning: Poor Time Management

What's Happening:

Time management requires planning, prioritizing, and estimating - skills that are still developing in tweens. Many kids truly don't feel time the way adults do.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when time slips away.
How to do it:
Acknowledge difficulty
Stay calm

What to say:
"Time got away from you."
"That happens."

Why it works: Reduces shame and defensiveness.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when time pressure creates anxiety.
How to do it:
Reduce urgency
Offer structure

What to say:
"We'll slow this down."
"Let's look at the clock together."

Why it works: Structure lowers stress.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when lateness repeats.
How to do it:
Set time limits
Teach planning

What to say:
"This has a time limit."
"Let's plan backwards."

Why it works: Explicit teaching builds awareness.
NOT THAT

Rushing
Yelling
Assuming it's intentional
