Executive Functioning: Difficulty Starting Tasks

What's Happening:

Older kids often struggle to start tasks not because they don't care, but because the task feels overwhelming, unclear, or emotionally loaded. Initiation requires executive functioning skills that are still developing.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when the child feels stuck.
How to do it:
Acknowledge the difficulty
Reduce the emotional weight

What to say:
"Getting started is the hardest part."
"That makes sense."

Why it works: Validation lowers resistance and shame.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when avoidance is anxiety-driven.
How to do it:
Break the task into very small steps
Stay nearby

What to say:
"Just the first step."
"I'll sit with you."

Why it works: Co-regulation supports task initiation.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when responsibilities are delayed.
How to do it:
Set a clear expectation
Create a starting routine

What to say:
"This needs to be started now."
"Let's begin together."

Why it works: Structure builds momentum and confidence.
NOT THAT

Repeated nagging
Threats
Doing it for them
