Emotional & Internalized: Low Motivation

What's Happening:

Low motivation in older kids is often tied to overwhelm, burnout, fear of failure, or a mismatch between expectations and skills. What looks like apathy is frequently emotional fatigue or discouragement.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when the child feels discouraged.
How to do it:
Acknowledge effort, not outcome
Reduce pressure

What to say:
"It feels hard to even start."
"That tells me you're overwhelmed."

Why it works: Validation lowers emotional resistance.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when motivation drops suddenly or dramatically.
How to do it:
Lower demands temporarily
Focus on regulation first

What to say:
"Let's slow this down."
"You're not failing."

Why it works: Safety restores capacity.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when responsibilities stall.
How to do it:
Clarify expectations
Break tasks into steps

What to say:
"This still needs to happen."
"Let's decide the first step."

Why it works: Structure builds momentum.
