Aggression & Impulse Control: Biting

What's Happening:

Biting often appears when a child lacks verbal skills, feels overwhelmed, or is seeking sensory input. It is most common when emotions exceed communication abilities.
THIS

Option A: Gentle / Connection-Based Response
Use this when biting is emotional.
How to do it:
Stay calm
Separate gently

What to say:
"I know you're upset."
"I'm here."

Why it works: Calm responses prevent escalation.

Option B: Trauma-Informed / Nervous System Support
Use this when biting is linked to dysregulation.
How to do it:
Reduce stimulation
Offer grounding

What to say:
"Breathe with me."
"You're safe."

Why it works: Grounding helps restore control.

Option C: Calm Boundary + Skill-Building
Use this when biting repeats.
How to do it:
State the boundary clearly
Offer safe alternatives

What to say:
"I won't let you bite."
"Teeth are not for people."

Why it works: Clear limits paired with teaching reduce future incidents.
